Over the last few months, the UAE has partnered with a number of other countries across the world in order to advance the global energy transition. Most recently, the UAE has joined forces with Germany, Kazakhstan and Scotland, formalising the partnerships with official agreements.
Masdar, the nation’s largest renewables company has now signed a cooperation agreement with German technology group Wilo. The agreement points to a shared vision to push renewable energy production, but also focus on improving energy efficiency. Oliver Hermes, CEO of Wilo welcomed the agreement saying, ‘only by addressing both supply and demand sides can we achieve a meaningful global energy transition.’
Masdar, along with the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, has also signed an agreement with Kazakhstan to boost the development of renewable energy and battery storage. Together, the two countries plan to develop a project providing 500MW of clean power, plus 2GW of storage capacity. Simultaneously, they are also working on a significant wind power project that promises to be the largest in the country. Currently, Kazakhstan is one of the world’s largest oil exporters, however they hope that the support from the UAE will help them reach their target of 15% renewable energy by 2030 and 50% by 2050. The wind power project alone is expected to increase their renewable energy sources by 3%.
A renewable energy hub is also scheduled to open in Abu Dhabi, aiming to support Scottish companies in the clean energy sector. Deputy Scottish First Minister Kate Forbes, highlighted the benefits this will bring saying, ‘The UAE Energy Hub presents Scottish businesses with an excellent opportunity to capitalise on this position and develop the partnerships, the collaborations and the investment opportunities that are ready to be unlocked.’
