Spain has provided the go-ahead for an impressive 283 new renewable energy projects, which must all be operational within the next 3 years. The majority of these (239) will be solar photovoltaic and the remaining 43 will be wind power, requiring an investment of €17 billion. All together, they will create an additional 28GW of sustainable energy for the country’s needs.
The projects will be overseen by the Administrative Construction Authorisation (AAC), after being granted permission by Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
Initially, the plans for this huge expansion in renewables included 428 projects, however a number of these were not able to get the required Environmental Impact Statement and so could not pass the planning stages.
Nevertheless, the 283 projects now going into their construction phase will be a huge benefit for the country, not just in the renewable energy they produce, but also creating 300,000 jobs, many of which will be in rural areas. The new solar and wind installations will go a long way to contributing to Spain’s overall goal to provide 81% of their electricity needs by 2030.
