Renewables Supplied a Staggering 71% of Portugal’s Electricity in 2024

In 2024, Portugal achieved a major milestone in its energy policy, with renewable sources accounting for 71% of the country’s electricity consumption. According to the national grid operator, Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN), this marks a historic record driven by the strategic expansion of photovoltaic and hydropower capacity.

Renewable electricity production totalled 36.7 terawatt-hours (TWh), distributed mainly among hydropower (28%), wind energy (27%), photovoltaic energy (10%) and biomass energy (6%). These achievements underscore Portugal’s continued commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and solidifying its role in the European green energy sector.

Photovoltaic energy experienced remarkable year-on-year growth of 37%, fuelled by the rapid integration of new infrastructure into the national grid. This advancement aligns with Portugal’s energy strategy, which emphasises technologies capable of addressing the increasing electricity demand.

Hydropower also made a substantial impact, recording a 24% annual increase. As a critical component of Portugal’s energy mix, hydropower contributes significantly to ensuring energy stability, particularly amid the global transition toward sustainable energy solutions.

This progress highlights the Portuguese government’s commitment to achieving energy independence and advancing the transition to a low-carbon economy. However, challenges persist, such as optimising infrastructure for intermittent energy sources and aligning national initiatives with the objectives of the European Green Deal. By fostering investments in renewable energy, Portugal reinforces its role as a pivotal contributor to European energy policy.

The growth of renewable energy is crucial for building a sustainable future and specialised training plays a vital role in equipping professionals with the skills needed to drive this transformation.
