Renewables Plug The Gap Caused By Increase In Energy Demand

A new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) has shown that demand for energy grew more than expected in 2024, increasing by 2.2%. Over the last decade, energy demand has usually increased by an average of 1.3% each year. This larger increase in 2024 has been attributed to the power sector and overall electricity use. Due to record global temperatures, more cooling was required in many countries; the electrification of transport and growth of artificial intelligence and need for data centres has also contributed to the increase.

The IEA’s Global Energy Review also highlighted that renewable sources of energy were crucial in making up the shortfall, meeting 80% of these demands and therefore limiting increased use of fossil fuels. The global renewable energy capacity grew by 700GW in 2024, setting a new annual record.

Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA welcomed the findings of the report, highlighting how renewables are helping to ‘loosen the links between economic growth and emissions.’

In order to meet future demands on energy, we will require a vast and skilled workforce to create and maintain more renewable energy projects.
