A recent report from Global Energy Monitor has highlighted Brazil, India and China as world leaders in clean energy, due to their widespread wind and solar power systems. Collectively these 3 countries have double the amount of renewable energy projects than fossil fuel ones currently in operation or in the planning phase. Despite this, China still provides a significant amount of funding towards fossil fuel projects in other countries.

China, India and Brazil are part of the wider BRICS network, an intergovernmental organisation formed in 2009 to co-ordinate and co-operate on issues such as economic growth and energy. Initially comprising of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, more and more countries are now joining BRICS.
Many of these new members currently rely on fossil fuels heavily to provide for their energy needs. Furthermore, the states making up BRICS now account for around 50% of global co2 emissions. As such, critics have argued that the original BRICS members, including China, have a responsibility to model a clean energy transition and reduce funding of international fossil fuel projects.
BRICS highlights the importance of global collaboration in bringing about a clean energy transition.
