SolarPower Europe: ‘The Solar Age Is Truly Here’

A new report from SolarPower Europe shows that 597GW of solar energy was installed globally in 2024; an impressive 33% increase on the year before. The report also predicted that by 2030 the world will be installing an impressive 1TW of solar power per year, signalling that we have reached ‘the solar age’ according to SolarPower Europe’s chief executive Walburga Hemetsberger.

China accounted for 55% of these new installations in 2024, but in 2025 India is expected to take over as the country to install the most new solar projects. It currently aims to add a further 200GW in the next 5 years. In comparison, solar growth in the Middle East and Africa was seen to decline slightly in 2024.

This highlights that while solar power is growing impressively, it is not evenly distributed across the world, hampering the reality of a fair and equitable energy transition. Global Solar Council chief executive Sonia Dunlop highlighted the importance of creating a better distribution of solar power and outlined what is needed to ensure this, saying:

“Achieving the global target of tripling renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade is possible with solar, we need 1TW of solar every year through 2030 and solar progress in more and more countries. That means action now to prepare for the future: smarter grids, faster permitting, bigger investments in emerging markets, and serious workforce planning.”
