Plans In Place For World’s Largest Renewable Energy Project

Developers in Western Australia are seeking permission to begin construction on what would be the world’s largest renewable energy project to date. If given the go ahead, it will cover 22,700km squared, an area larger than some countries.

With 3000 wind turbines and 60 million solar PV panels, this vast project, known as the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH), would add a staggering 70 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy to Australia’s energy mix. Project developers, InterContinental Energy and CWP Global, believe the power created annually (an estimated 200 terawatt-hours) will match Australia’s current total power generation. As a result, it is hoped that some of this energy can be exported, with an infrastructure corridor to the coast also planned for the development.

InterContinental Energy specialise in very large-scale energy projects, previously working on a 25GW solar project in Oman and a further 26 GW project in Australia. However, it will be some time before the project becomes operational, with an estimated 30-year construction phase.
