We were eager to hear about his experience studying our Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award. Robert is part of the REI’s global network of course participants from over 150 countries worldwide. Our alumni include delegates from Hilton International Hotels, EDF Energy, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and many more.

The REI’s Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award is available to study flexibly online from home over an 18-month period. This award includes 15 courses with access to tutorial videos led by renowned academic professors and industry experts, plus the option of studying 3 of your courses in the Live Virtual Classroom.

Robert Nyamvumba was born in Rwanda in 1979. He has a BSc. in Electrical Engineering from Kigali Institute for Science and Technology (KIST) followed by a Masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering from KTH/Sweden.

After achieving his Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award, Robert spoke with us about his experience with the REI.

1. Hello Robert, what is your professional background & expertise and how does this relate to the renewable energy field?

I am an electrical engineer and hold a Masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering from KTH, Sweden. I have over 15 years of experience in the energy sector. This includes working at the state utility and policy level, collaborating with the Government in the Ministry of Infrastructure. In my position I am responsible for the energy sector policies, strategies, strategic sector project implementations, sector stakeholder coordination, sector reforms and capacity building, donor community coordination and resources mobilisation, monitoring and evaluation of energy-related projects.

I am also a Country (Rwanda) Representative in multilateral International Agencies namely IRENA, SE4ALL-Africa Hub, IAEA.

The background provided above indicates my professional expertise in renewable energy-related projects working at both Utility-Rwanda Energy Group and the Ministry of Infrastructure in Rwanda. In particular, advocating renewable energy projects with the aim of over 60% of Rwanda’s energy mix being renewable by 2030.

2. Why did you choose to train with the Renewable Energy Institute?

My focus was mainly on obtaining qualifications as a trained renewable energy consultant/expert from an internationally recognised institution. I chose the REI in particular to grant me an opportunity to broaden my skills and knowledge in new technologies. Hydrogen Energy, Energy Storage, Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy Management and Finance and Carbon Finance were of particular interest. This will help me provide quality services to my esteemed clients, whom I advise on matters related to their renewable energy portfolios.

3. What skills and knowledge have you acquired through the Master in Renewable Energy Award Pathway?

I gained a lot of knowledge while pursuing the Master in Renewable Energy Award pathway. I am confident that the skills acquired, mainly in Renewable Energy Management and Finance, Carbon Finance, Hydrogen Energy, Energy Storage, Solar Photovoltaic and Energy Efficiency in Buildings were most beneficial to me. This knowledge will boost my morale and confidence as an electrical engineer. I feel able to put my learning into practice, providing quality consultancy services in renewable energy-related infrastructure projects.

4. How will you apply these skills to your career, either directly or indirectly?

I currently specialise in providing consultancy services in renewable energy-related infrastructure projects in Africa. The skills I have gained will help me progress my career as a qualified professional expert in renewable energy and finance, working on major infrastructure projects to increase the share of renewable energies in the targeted global energy mix by 2030 under SDG 7. This will be possible by working hand-in-hand with both the public and private sectors in Africa and beyond, to advocate for the making of informed investment decisions to achieve the needed global renewable energy share in the world’s total energy mix.

5. All around the world, companies and organisations are preparing for a transition to a net zero carbon future. What are DIS Ltd’s goals for sustainability?

DIS Ltd’s major goals are; (1) Promoting sustainable agriculture in Africa by implementing smart irrigation schemes powered by solar energy and modern farming practices. This initiative aims to support farmers in transitioning from traditional methods to high-tech technologies ultimately increasing yield per hectare, reducing poverty and hunger. (2) To achieve high-quality milk production through modern farming techniques, while incorporating renewable energy solutions such as efficient milking cooling systems, rooftop or standalone solar systems, and home biogas production.
