After achieving his Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award, Bryan spoke with us about his experience with the REI.

1. Hello Bryan, what is your professional background and how does this relate to the renewable energy field?

In my professional journey, I’ve immersed myself in the dynamic engineering field, mainly focusing on Electrical and Automation Engineering. My passion for understanding the practical applications of electricity sparked my interest in renewable energy, driving me to explore its potential to revolutionize power generation and consumption. Over the years, I’ve played pivotal roles in various photovoltaic projects, from designing and implementing installations to managing solar initiatives.

As a Climate Interactive Ambassador and a Leader in Energy Ambassador, I advocate for sustainable energy practices and collaborative initiatives. Currently serving as a Technical Engineer for GreenYellow Austral, I am deeply committed to driving impactful change in renewable energy, leveraging my expertise and dedication to create a more sustainable future.

My overarching ambition is to forge a new generation of young engineers, climate activists and energy leaders in Mauritius, across Africa and worldwide, to ignite a ripple effect of positive change that resonates far beyond our borders.

2. Why did you choose to train with the Renewable Energy Institute?

Enrolling in the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy program wasn’t merely a decision but a purposeful choice to deepen my understanding of renewable energy management, finance and technology. I envisioned this program as a gateway to unlocking new insights, innovative approaches and transformative solutions to address the pressing challenges facing our planet’s energy landscape.

By immersing myself in the program’s curriculum, I sought to broaden my horizons, refine my skills and acquire the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of the renewable energy sector. With each module and lecture, I envisioned myself gaining knowledge and the ability to enact tangible change and contribute meaningfully to a sustainable future.

I embarked on the REI journey as I knew I would have the invaluable opportunity to network with reputed lecturers and diverse classmates. Engaging with industry experts and peers offers a wealth of perspectives, experiences and potential collaborations that can further enhance my learning and contribute to my professional growth.

3. What skills and knowledge have you acquired through the Master in Renewable Energy Award Pathway?

Through the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy courses, I have amassed a diverse skill set and gained extensive knowledge crucial for adeptly navigating the renewable energy sector. The curriculum encompassed a broad spectrum of topics including: Renewable Energy Management & Finance, Renewable Energy Solutions, Solar Photovoltaic, Wind Power, Biomass and more.

Specifically, the pathway provided invaluable insights into three pivotal areas: Carbon Finance, Hydrogen Energy and Renewable Energy Management & Finance. In the realm of Carbon Finance, I acquired a deep understanding of carbon markets, emissions trading and carbon pricing mechanisms. This knowledge enables me to effectively assess the financial implications of carbon emissions and integrate carbon management strategies into renewable energy projects.

The program also sheds light on the significance of Hydrogen Energy as a clean and versatile energy carrier. I gained a profound understanding of its role in the renewable energy transition by learning about various hydrogen production methods, storage technologies, and utilization pathways, including fuel cells and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Furthermore, in Renewable Energy Management & Finance, I developed comprehensive skills in managing renewable energy projects from a financial perspective. This included expertise in project financing, investment analysis, risk management and economic modelling tailored to renewable energy initiatives. Armed with this proficiency, I am adept at evaluating the financial viability of renewable energy projects, securing funding and optimizing financial performance throughout project lifecycles.

4. How will you apply these skills to your career, either directly or indirectly?

As I embark on the next phase of my career journey, armed with a wealth of knowledge and skills acquired through my experiences and education, I am poised to significantly impact the renewable energy sector. From understanding Carbon Finance to integrating carbon management strategies into renewable energy projects, I aim to ensure environmental sustainability while maximizing financial viability. Additionally, leveraging my expertise in Electric Vehicles and Battery Storage Systems, I will explore innovative ways to incorporate these technologies into photovoltaic installations, thus contributing to advancing integrated renewable energy systems.

5. All around the world, companies and organisations are preparing for a transition to a net zero carbon future. What are GreenYellow’s goals for sustainability?

As a leading player in the renewable energy sector, my company GreenYellow Austral is fully committed to the global transition towards a net-zero carbon future. Our ambitious sustainability goals reflect our dedication to environmental stewardship, innovation, and societal responsibility.

I aim to advocate for environmental conservation, raise awareness about sustainability issues and actively contribute to advancing renewable energy adoption in my community. Continuous learning and improvement are integral to my approach, as I seek to stay informed about emerging sustainability trends and technologies while continuously refining my personal sustainability practices. My goal is to play a proactive role in building a more sustainable world, leaving a positive legacy for future generations and this aligns with my current roles as a Climate Interactive Ambassador and Leaders in Energy Ambassador, where I actively engage in initiatives promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
