German energy company RWE proceed with plans for 2 new wind farms

Germany’s biggest power producer has revealed a new project to be built in the German North Sea, consisting of 2 offshore wind farms with a total capacity of 1.6 gigawatts (GW). The Nordseecluster project will be implemented in 2 phases, Nordseecluster A and B, and is located 50 km north of the island Juist.

Germany 2 new wind farms

“Our portfolio already includes 6 offshore wind farms off Germany’s coastlines. The Nordseecluster will add 2 more,” said Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind. “This sends out a good signal for the energy transition in Germany and for RWE. With a total capacity of 1.6 gigawatts, these wind farms will generate around 6.5 terawatt hours of green electricity per year. This will contribute in particular to the decarbonization of industry in our home market.”

The total capacity for Nordseecluster A is 660 MW (megawatts) and by 2027, all 44 wind turbines are planned to be connected to the grid. Manufacturing of some key components has already started, while the construction itself is set to begin next year. Nordseecluster B adds a further 900 MW (megawatts) of capacity, and is scheduled to commence operation from the beginning of 2029.

“RWE will use the green electricity generated from the wind farms to support its industrial customers on the path to decarbonisation with customised energy solutions. These customers increasingly include operators of AI data centres,” the German power giant said in a statement.

RWE has been focusing on boosting its renewables progress in recent years, shutting down 5 coal power plants and aiming to complete its coal phase-out by 2030. Over the past 2 decades, the German company has put 19 offshore wind farms into operation and has big plans to invest a further $60 billion into renewable energy sources including wind, batteries and hydrogen projects.
