REI Alumni Spotlight – ROV Pilot, Bogi Winther

GMC Certificate Achievers & REI Alumni Spotlight

ROV Pilot, Bogi Winther

The Renewable Energy Institute is pleased to focus on the achievements of those who have attended the REI’s accredited Renewable Energy courses and accomplished the internationally recognised Galileo Master Certificate to further their careers in the Green Energy sector.

This month, the REI is delighted to speak with Bogi Winther, ROV Pilot and Marine Engineer, to hear about his experience of studying the Online Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award.  Bogi is part of the Renewable Energy Institute’s global network of course participants from over 150 countries worldwide, including delegates from PwC, Hilton International Hotels, EDF Energy, the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and many more.

The REI’s 12-course Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award is available to study flexibly online from home over an 18-month period, with access to tutorial videos led by renowned academic professors and industry experts.

1. Hi Bogi, what is your professional background and how does this relate to the Renewable Energy field?

I have a technical background as a Mechanic and Marine Engineer. I have worked in the oil industry as a ROV Pilot so the Renewable Energy field is a 360 degree turn from my previous work. But my technical knowledge and concrete experiences from other sectors are a good basis to understand the theoretical as well as the technical side of the Renewable Energy sector. 2. Why did you choose to train with the Renewable Energy Institute?

I have always had a great interest in Renewable Energy. After working offshore for many years, I moved to Brussels with my family, and I saw this as an opportunity to get an education within the field of Renewable Energy. I found the Renewable Energy Institute by searching online and it appealed to me as it is a very professional institute with many participants from big companies around the world.

3. Tell us about the online courses that you have studied.
What aspects of studying through distance learning do you find most interesting or rewarding?

I chose to study the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award because I found all 12 courses on the programme very interesting. The Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award has a wide range of topics covering everything from Renewable Energy Management and Finance to Biomass, Electrics for Renewables, Wind Power, and Energy Efficiency in Buildings, just to name a few (see the full list of Master Award courses here). These are all topics that I can benefit from in the future.

I like this method of studying and it suits me very well. I can just go online and study when it fits and for as long as I want. All I need is a computer which is connected to the internet, and I can be anywhere in the world while studying at the Renewable Energy Institute, that is fantastic.

4. What are the skills and knowledge that you have gained on the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy so far?

For every course I studied on the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award, I acquired a lot of knowledge which can be placed in a larger perspective. You can choose to go into more detail with some of the topics which you find more interesting and gain even more knowledge and skills through the references and links provided in the course. I am looking forward to moving back to the Faroe Islands and to start working with Renewable Energy.

5. How will you apply these skills to your career, either directly or indirectly?

The Faroe Islands are placed in the North Atlantic Ocean with many opportunities to use Renewable Energy sources such as Wind Power, and Wave and Hydro Power. On average, clean energy in the form of Wind and Hydro Power stands for approximately 50% of the annual electricity supply. The Faroe Islands government’s goal is that the electrical supply will be entirely sourced from Renewable Energy by 2030. Renewable Energy is an exciting field to work within – there are many interesting projects in the planning stage such as onshore and offshore wind farms, energy storage and wave and hydro power. All the skills and knowledge I gained when studying the Accredited Master in Renewable Energy Award at the Renewable Energy Institute will be incredibly useful for my future career in the Renewable Energy sector.
